As described on U.S. Figure Skating’s website, synchronized skating offers athletes the chance to compete with a team and learn the value of teamwork and camaraderie. Formed in 1956 by Dr. Richard Porter, the sport was known as precision skating for the intricate moves skaters perform on the ice together. U.S. Figure Skating held the first U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships in 1984 and the first World Synchronized Skating Championships in 2000. Today, there are about 600 registered synchronized teams in the United States.
Teams of eight to 20 skaters perform challenging formations and step sequences together, and competitions use the same judging system as singles, pairs and ice dance. As with other disciplines, all teams perform a free skate with required elements, and junior- and senior-level teams also perform a short program.

HISTORY
ABOUT US
Team Image Synchronized Skating Teams was founded by Sylvia Muccio, a passionate and creative woman whose spirit inspired many who knew her. She was a pioneer of synchronized skating in the NYC Metro area and was recognized by many for her passion and dedication to her team, as well as her skaters.
Born in Chicago, Sylvia moved to New York in 1983 and began her coaching career at E.J. Murray's Skating Center in Yonkers, New York. There Sylvia collaborated with others to create elaborate skating shows which introduced the art of synchronized skating to young skaters. In 1987, she had her skaters perform at the annual Ice Show and from there, Team Image was born.
Sylvia dedicated her life to the success of her skaters. In fact, her Intermediate line won the Gold Medal in 2009 at the U.S Synchronized Skating Championship while she watched from home because she was undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Sylvia’s dedication and perseverance also led to her earning a PSA Master Rating.
Sylvia passed away in 2013 after a long battle with cancer. Her spirit is kept alive today through the hundreds of skaters that continue to skate not just on the Team that she founded but on other senior teams around the country.
